I found this bizarre scene whilst walking on Broad scars above the village of Malham in the Yorkshire Dales. This area has some of the finest examples of limestone pavement - a naturally occurring labyrinth of fissures created by glacial erosion, time and weather. Rare plants survive in the micro climate that these fissures provide and hardy trees cling tenaciously to life in the most arduous of conditions. Not all survive, but even in death this one seemed to be reaching out and grasping for life.
